Instructional coaching is one of the most effective ways to improve teaching and learning
When teachers have a trusted partner to plan instruction, model strategies, and give feedback, students benefit. Coaching isn’t about evaluation — it’s about growth, collaboration, and making teaching stronger every day.
Every student deserves a great teacher and every teacher deserves support to keep growing. Right now, too many Maryland students are falling behind. Instructional coaching helps change that.
What is Instructional Coaching?
Instructional coaching is a form of professional learning that helps teachers improve their practice. It takes place in the classroom and focuses on real teaching. Coaches and teachers work together through planning, modeling, observation, and feedback. Coaching isn’t about rating or judging, it’s about trust, collaboration, and continuous growth.
Instructional Coaching IS:
- Responsive to the teacher's needs
- On-the-job, continuous support
- Growth-focused feedback
- Collaborative
Instructional Coaching IS NOT:
- Formal evaluation or rating
- Only for struggling teachers
- Telling teachers what to do
- A quick fix
