English Language Arts and Literacy (ELA/L)
About the Assessment
English Language Arts and Literacy (ELA/L) assessments measure how well students demonstrate the grade-level knowledge and skills defined in the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. The assessments provide information about what students know and can do in reading and writing in relation to grade-level expectations.
In reading, students engage with literary and informational texts and answer questions that measure reading comprehension, analysis, and vocabulary in context. In Grade 3, the assessment also measures foundational reading skills. In writing, students respond to text-based prompts using evidence from the passages they read to develop and support their ideas. Student writing is evaluated for both written expression and writing conventions.
