Maryland State Department of Education

Lorena Wu

Student Member, Maryland State Board of Education

About

Term: 2026 - 2027, Montgomery County

Member, Education Policy Committee

As the daughter of two civil servants, Lorena Wu is a community-oriented youth leader with a strong commitment to service as demonstrated throughout her advocacy journey. In her role as Co-President of Eco MoCo, the state's largest student-led environmental nonprofit, Lorena led efforts that collected over 400 pounds of trash and awarded over 200 hours of community service. Her advocacy with local, state, and national leaders was key in helping Eco MoCo oppose the M83 Highway, testify on transit issues, and lobby for environmental legislation, earning the organization the Joe Howard Environmental Award.

Appointed to the Maryland Youth Advisory Council by the Maryland Association of Student Councils, Lorena spent two years advising the Maryland General Assembly (MGA) on youth policies. As Historian and youngest Executive Board Member, she authored the annual Governor's report and helped manage $12,000 in grants for youth-led organizations.

Lorena’s dedication to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students is demonstrated through her collaboration with students and officials to shape educational policy through her Legislative Affairs roles as the Director for the Student Member of the MCPS Board of Education Advisory Council and Deputy for the Montgomery County Regional SGA.

In addition, she champions Asian American rights through testimony before the MCPS Board of Education and the MGA, serving as Legislative Aide for OCA–the Asian Pacific American Advocates' Greater Washington, D.C. youth council. Her internships with the offices of Delegates Wu and Qi have further deepened her legislative experience.

Beyond policy work, Lorena is a fencing athlete and musician. Looking ahead, she is eager to continue her service to her community, advocating for students statewide to make a lasting impact on Maryland's educational system. Lorena remains grateful for her family, friends, teachers, and mentors who have supported her throughout this journey.
